From October 4, 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is changing the way cheques are cleared. Instead of waiting a day or two, money from a cheque will reach your account in just a few hours. From January 3, 2026, the system will become even faster and stricter.
What’s New?
- Cheques will now be cleared in real time during the day, not in end-of-day batches.
- Banks will scan cheques as soon as you submit them (between 10 AM and 4 PM) and send them for processing immediately.
- The bank of the person who issued the cheque (drawee bank) must quickly confirm if the cheque will be paid or rejected.
- If the bank doesn’t reply in time, the cheque will be treated as approved automatically.
- Once cleared, your bank must credit the money to your account right away, or at most within one hour.

Two Phases of Rollout
- Phase 1 (October 4, 2025 – January 2, 2026):
- Cheques will be accepted from 10 AM to 4 PM.
- The issuing bank has time until 7 PM to confirm.
- If they don’t respond, the cheque is considered approved.
- Phase 2 (From January 3, 2026):
- The rules become tighter.
- The issuing bank gets only 3 hours to confirm.
- For example: If a cheque is deposited at 10:30 AM, the issuing bank must respond by 1:30 PM.
How It Worked Before
Earlier, cheque clearance was batch-based.
- Banks collected cheques during the day and processed them in fixed slots.
- Payments usually got settled the next working day (T+1).
- Outstation cheques (different city) could take 3–7 days or more in the past.
- Delays were common if you missed the cut-off time or deposited on a Friday/Saturday.
Why This Matters to You
- Faster access to money – no more waiting till the next day.
- More certainty – if banks don’t confirm, the cheque is automatically cleared.
- Better cash flow – great for businesses and individuals who depend on cheque payments.
Official RBI Circular (Simplified)
The RBI has officially said: “Cheque clearing will move from batch processing to continuous clearing with settlement on realisation. Phase 1 starts on October 4, 2025, and Phase 2 starts on January 3, 2026. Banks must make customers aware and be ready for continuous processing.”
What You Should Do
- Deposit cheques before 4 PM to ensure same-day clearance.
- Expect your account to be credited within a few hours instead of a day or more.
- Remember, cheques can still bounce if there are insufficient funds, wrong signature, or errors.
- Ask your bank for exact cut-off times, since they may differ slightly.
The Bottom Line
RBI’s new system means cheques will no longer feel “slow.” By early 2026, India’s cheque clearing will be almost real-time, giving you quicker access to your money and making payments smoother for everyone.
