The Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) has announced an All India Demand Day on 21 November 2024, focusing on critical issues affecting the banking sector. The protest aims to draw attention to challenges such as recruitment stagnation, outsourcing, the engagement of apprentices, and customer-related grievances.

Members of BEFI all across India will observe demand day by displaying posters and wearing badges at their workplaces. Speaking to Kanal, BEFI All India President S. S. Anil highlighted the burning issues in the banking industry. "Standstill recruitment, outsourcing, and the engagement of apprentices are longstanding concerns for the banking industry. Various employees' and officers' unions have raised these issues with the Indian Banks' Association (IBA) and managements. However, the response from management to resolve these concerns has been unsatisfactory. As a result, we have called for a protest day to reaffirm our demands."

Recruitment and Work-Life Balance

The acute shortage of employees in the banking industry, particularly in the workmen cadre, remains a pressing concern. BEFI’s Central Committee (CC) has decided to organise state-level dharnas across India to address recruitment challenges and state-specific issues. These protests will adhere to local restrictions in respective areas.

In addition, BEFI is pushing for the introduction of a five-day banking week to improve work-life balance. This demand, rooted in the 12th Bipartite Settlement, was strongly advocated in the recent BEFI CC meeting held in Lucknow. A resolution has been adopted, and state federations are expected to include this issue in their state-level protests.

The all India Demand Day is the first in a series of demand days outlined by BEFI. Subsequent protests include 19 December 2024, against financial mismanagement in the banking sector, and 21 January 2025, focusing on cooperative banking challenges.
