Two alarming incidents of violence against bankers in Patna and Ahmedabad on Thursday and Friday respectively have drawn national attention, with videos of the assaults going viral on social media. The attacks have reignited discussions on the safety of bankers and prompted renewed calls for stricter protective measures, including the long-demanded "Bankers’ Protection Act."

Assault on Female Canara Bank Manager in Patna

On 07 December 2024, a shocking incident occurred at a Canara Bank branch in Patna’s Gandhi Maidan area. Vandana Verma, the branch manager, was assaulted by a contractor over a loan-related dispute. The incident, which took place inside the branch, was caught on video, sparking widespread outrage on social media.

Patna Police swiftly registered a case and arrested the accused. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Nagar-2, Mr. Prakash, stated, “The individual involved in the harassment and assault has been apprehended, and the matter is under thorough investigation.” Legal proceedings are ongoing to ensure accountability.

The video of the assault triggered an outpouring of support for Verma from banking professionals nationwide, with many voicing concerns about the lack of security in bank branches and the need for preventive measures.

Union Bank Manager Attacked in Ahmedabad

On 05 December 2024, another incident unfolded at Union Bank’s Premchandnagar branch in Ahmedabad. A customer, identified as Jaiman Raval, reportedly became violent during a confrontation over Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) on fixed deposit interest.

Saurabh Singh, the branch manager, lodged a complaint stating that despite explaining the TDS refund process, Raval became agitated, accusing the bank of misappropriation. The customer then allegedly pulled Singh’s ID card, grabbed his shirt, and tore it. When Shubham Jain, a SUD Life Insurance employee, intervened, Raval slapped him and tore his shirt.

The situation was brought under control by other staff and customers. Vastrapur Police Inspector L L Chavda confirmed, “The accused has been arrested, and further investigation is underway.”

Social Media Reacts

Videos of both incidents went viral on social media, triggering widespread discussions about the safety of bankers. Bank employees highlighted the increasing stress in financial transactions and the rising instances of violence faced by branch staff.

Several banking professionals have demanded immediate action to address the issue, including the appointment of security guards at every branch and the enactment of legislation to protect bank employees from harassment and assault while performing their duties.

Renewed Calls for Bankers’ Protection Act

The recent incidents have revived demands for a "Bankers’ Protection Act," a long-pending request from unions and employees. The need for such legislation was strongly voiced earlier this year during a series of attacks on bank employees in Maharashtra. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) Maharashtra protested the rising violence and sought institutional measures to ensure the safety of banking staff.

The incidents in Patna and Ahmedabad underscore the urgent need to address safety concerns in bank branches across the country. With growing calls for action, the spotlight is now on policymakers and banking authorities to provide a secure environment for employees, protect them from violence, and restore their confidence at the workplace.
