In a sharp and urgent communication, the Dehradun Zonal Office of UCO Bank has issued a stern advisory to all branch staff under its jurisdiction. The notice cautions against the frequent availing of leave and the misuse of deputation practices, which the bank says are severely impacting branch performance and discipline.
The advisory, dated 2 June 2025, notes with a lot of seriousness that despite the bank’s critical operational challenges, some staff continue to prioritize personal commitments over institutional obligations. This trend, the note suggests, is especially worrying at a time when 100%+ performance is expected from all employees to ensure sustainable growth and prevent decline.
The particular concern is the rising trend of staff taking medical leave on flimsy grounds, often backed by unverified or questionable medical certificates. The bank warns that Branch Heads sanctioning such leaves without validating the genuineness of these certificates will be considered to be committing a “very serious offence.”

“No leave (except in emergency) shall be availed unless it is sanctioned in HRMS,” the advisory reads, placing full accountability on Branch Heads to ensure business continuity even when sanctioning leaves.

Furthermore, the circular clearly states that deputation must not be used as a backup solution for absent staff. Branch Heads are instructed to manage operations with available staff strength unless proper alternate arrangements are in place.
The tone of the letter indicates a tightening of internal governance and a renewed emphasis on performance discipline across branches.
Staff have been warned to desist from availing frequent and unnecessary leaves. The advisory ends with an uncompromising directive:
“Ensure strict compliance without fail.”
This move signals UCO Bank’s growing focus on strengthening accountability at the grassroots level in response to ongoing performance concerns.

🛑 Bankers are humans, not machines. UCO Bank's recent advisory discouraging frequent leaves — even on medical grounds — raises serious concerns about employee rights, mental health, and humane working conditions. 🔹 Right to rest is a basic human right under Article 24 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 🔹 Labeling legitimate medical leaves as “small” and questioning their authenticity is not just unethical — it’s dehumanizing. 🔹 Mental health is real. Burnout is real. Denying leave only worsens both. 🔹 Employees should not be guilt-tripped or forced to work without adequate backup planning. That’s a management failure, not a staff failing. 🔹 No one should be treated like a disposable resource in the name of “performance.” We stand for a banking system that respects health, dignity, and rights. We need leadership with empathy — not directives that silence human needs. #HumanRights #WorkplaceWellbeing #MentalHealthMatters #BankingReform #DignityAtWork #beingbanker #banklife
