The All India Bank of Baroda Officers’ Union (AIBOBOU) has raised serious concerns over the suicide of Chief Manager Shivshankar Mitra at the Baramati branch of Bank of Baroda (BoB).  In a formal communication dated 19th July 2025 to the Chief Justice of India, the union has linked the incident to institutional pressure and toxic workplace conditions. The letter seeks judicial scrutiny and legal accountability of top executives, marking a significant development in ongoing discussions about workplace stress in the Indian banking sector.

The union expressed “deep anguish and profound concern” over the incident, which occurred inside the bank premises and was reportedly triggered by extreme work pressure.

According to the union's letter, Shivshankar Mitra was serving as Chief Manager at BoB’s Baramati Branch. On 17th July 2025, he was found hanging inside the branch premises. A suicide note left behind cited unsustainable work pressure as the reason for his action. The union described the incident as an institutional tragedy rather than a personal one, citing it as a result of workplace conditions.

Allegations of Toxic Work Culture

AIBOBOU stated that the death is not an isolated case of personal distress but a reflection of a toxic, exploitative, and humiliating work environment under the bank’s current executive leadership. The union listed several contributing factors, including:

  • Consistent late-night video calls with humiliating language

  • Imposition of unachievable targets without adequate manpower or resources

  • Mental pressure through threats of transfers and punishments

  • A work environment filled with fear and psychological stress

The union termed these as “systematic psychological torture.”

Union's Demands Before the Supreme Court

AIBOBOU has placed the following demands before the Chief Justice:

  1. Suo motu cognisance of the incident in public interest

  2. A judicial or independent probe under Supreme Court supervision

  3. Criminal cases under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against responsible Bank of Baroda executives

  4. Guidelines to prevent institutional harassment and mental cruelty

  5. Monetary and employment relief for the family of the deceased officer

The union stated that this incident qualifies as abetment to suicide and holds the institution accountable for creating coercive work conditions.

Union Expresses Faith in Judiciary

In closing, the union expressed its faith in the Hon’ble Supreme Court to uphold justice for Shivshankar Mitra and to ensure that similar incidents do not recur in Public Sector Banks (PSB’s).
