AIRRBEA Concludes MPs Outreach Campaign Voicing The Need of NRBI Formation

Between July 22 and 25, a total of 91 MPs, including 7 union ministers, were approached with greetings and a memorandum advocating for the formation of NRBI.

 The second phase of the Member of Parliament (MPs) outreach campaign, initiated by the All India Regional Rural Bank Employees Association (AIRRBEA) on July 22, 2024, successfully concluded on July 25 in New Delhi. AIRRBEA central leadership, accompanied by state leaders, camped in the national capital to advocate for the establishment of the National Rural Bank of India (NRBI) among other key demands.

Between July 22 and 25, a total of 91 MPs, including 7 union ministers, were approached with greetings and a memorandum advocating for the formation of NRBI. The primary demand emphasised the need for a rural bank at the state level, centrally controlled under NRBI, dedicated to serving rural India’s banking needs. AIRRBEA directed its state units to submit memoranda to their respective state MPs, urging serious consideration of the NRBI demand.

AIRRBEA reached out to MPs from 14 political parties: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Indian National Congress (INC), Samajwadi Party (SP), Trinamool Congress (TMC), Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Lok Janshakti Party-Ramvilas (LJP-R), Communist Party of India Marxist-Leninist (CPIML), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), and Janata Dal Secular (JDS).

The distribution of MPs contacted during the outreach campaign is as follows:

  7. Punjab - 2
  8. Uttar Pradesh - 16

  14. Himachal Pradesh - 1
  15. West Bengal - 1

Fifty representatives from various states participated in the Delhi campaign, including young representatives. Key union ministers who received the memorandum included:

  2. Shri Pankaj Chaudhary, MoS, Finance
  3. Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister of Culture and Tourism 
  4. Shri Bandi Sanjay, MoS, Home Affairs
  5. Shri Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, Union Minister for Civil Aviation
  6. Shri Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister for Renewable Energy, Consumer Affairs and Food
  7. Shri H. D. Kumar Swamy, Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel

The delegation submitted the memorandum to Union Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Choudhary, emphasising the formation of NRBI delinking it from sponsor banks to ensure a uniform approach. They also detailed the sponsor bank-induced manpower shortage.

A member of the AIRRBEA Karnataka delegation revealed that Union Minister Prahlad Joshi acknowledged the need to strengthen the RRBs when the NRBI memorandum was read out.

S. Venkateshwar Reddy, AIRRBEA Secretary General, told Kanal, “The MPs outreach program was a success as our memorandum on forming NRBI was received well by all the 91 MPs. Moreover, all seven union ministers assured that the NRBI issue would be positively forwarded to the Finance Minister, and a future meeting with the Finance Minister would be diligently sorted out.”

In a similar vein, MP from Faizabad Awadhesh Prasad met the delegation from UP and assured complete support for the cause of NRBI formation.

According to a member of AIRRBEA, the four-day campaign marked a historic success in solidifying the demand for NRBI. Furthermore, AIRRBEA aims to highlight the significant contributions of the RRBs as they approach their 50th anniversary on October 2, 2024.
