The Association of UCO Bank Officers (AUCBO, affiliated to National Organisation of Bank Officers(NOBO) & Bharat Mazdur Sangh(BMS)), representing UCO Bank officers in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, has announced plans for a protest demonstration on 13 November, 2024, in Coimbatore. This protest aims to address grievances regarding alleged favouritism, discriminatory transfers, and unfair practices attributed to the Zonal Manager of UCO Bank's Coimbatore Zone. J Senthil Kumar, General Secretary of AUCBO, has expressed concerns over several incidents that officers believe undermine equality and fairness within the bank.

Grievances and Allegations

According to AUCBO's statement, a pattern of preferential treatment and discrimination has emerged, particularly in the transfer orders issued on 29 October, 2024. One primary allegation is that female officers were prematurely transferred in the middle of the academic season, causing considerable hardship. In contrast, other officers reportedly received favourable placements without similar disruptions.

The association also highlighted the issue of physically challenged officers whose requests for convenient postings were allegedly ignored. AUCBO claims that certain branches have been left understaffed following these transfers, impacting operations and burdening remaining officers.

Concerns Over Manpower Allocation

AUCBO stated that the transfer practices have created a notable imbalance in manpower allocation across branches, with some branches left struggling without adequate staffing. “Officers have been moved from branches to places of their choice, creating new assignments especially for them,” Senthil Kumar told Kanal, emphasising that these actions appear to be favoured placements. Branches such as Vadakadu and Nagapattinam reportedly face acute understaffing as a result.

Kumar also alleged that the Zonal Manager responded to union protests with threats of retaliatory action, adding to an atmosphere of tension and unease among officers. AUCBO has issued an ultimatum to UCO Bank management, demanding the immediate cancellation of the contested transfer orders and a review of the current staffing policies to ensure fairness and impartiality.

AUCBO has stated that if the demands remain unaddressed, it will escalate the issue, with upcoming mass demonstrations. The 13 November protest, scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM in front of the Coimbatore Zonal Office, aims to underscore the association's demands.
