The All India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC), Delhi State Unit, has written to Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta, requesting that Chhath Puja be declared a public holiday for bank employees in Delhi. The federation highlighted that a large section of the banking workforce in Delhi hails from regions where Chhath Puja holds deep cultural and religious importance.

Request for Chhath Puja Holiday
In the official communication dated October 21, 2025, AIBOC emphasised that Chhath Puja is among the most revered festivals for people from Bihar, Jharkhand, and Eastern Uttar Pradesh. It is celebrated with great devotion in Delhi as well, reflecting the city’s diverse cultural fabric.

Challenges Faced by Bank Employees
The Confederation pointed out that the festival involves elaborate religious observances spread over two days, making it difficult for employees to manage both rituals and official duties. Since Delhi currently does not recognise Chhath Puja as an official holiday, many employees face hardship and emotional distress while trying to perform the rituals associated with the festival.

Appeal for Cultural Recognition
AIBOC stated that granting a holiday would bring relief to thousands of bank employees and their families in Delhi while showcasing the government’s respect for cultural diversity. The organisation also noted that several other states and union territories have already recognised Chhath Puja as an official holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

The Confederation’s request aims to align Delhi with other regions that officially observe Chhath Puja, ensuring inclusivity for the banking community. The decision, if approved, would be a symbolic recognition of cultural unity and the growing significance of the festival in the capital.
