The All India Regional Rural Bank Employees Association (AIRRBEA) is gearing up to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the formation of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) with a series of events scheduled to begin on October 2, 2024. The Golden Jubilee celebrations, which will run through October 2, 2025, aim to highlight the crucial role RRBs have played in serving rural communities across India for the past five decades.

The core committee letter, dated September 21, 2024, outlines a year-long campaign to commemorate the five-decade journey of RRBs.

It mentioned, “The units must convene a special Committee meeting and chalk out various programs of holding Seminars / Jathas at all headquarters of RRBs and if possible in all the districts. We have to involve leaders from all political parties, social activists, and customers in the programs. The programs should start on 2nd October 2024 in all RRBs jointly by our units through organising meetings / seminar / garlanding of Gandhi statues highlighting particularly our demand of formation of NRBI, Opposing IPO in RRBs, Parity in the matter of all staff benefits with those of the Sponsor Banks, immediate revision of Promotion Policy, immediate recruitment of adequate number of staff as per updated Manpower policy and fulfilment of all pending demands placed by the AIRRBEA.”

RRBs were established in the year 1975 with the Ordinance on 26 September 1975 by the Narasimham Working Group (NWG) and the legislation of the Regional Rural Banks Act, 1976

Emphasis on Achievements and Agitation

AIRRBEA Secretary General, Venkateshwar Reddy, told Kanal, “The focus of these events goes beyond celebrating the achievements of RRBs. It will also serve to raise awareness about several key demands, including the formation of the National Rural Bank of India (NRBI), opposition to any moves for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in RRBs, and ensuring parity in staff benefits with those of sponsor banks.”

He further added, “The association will highlight the urgent need for recruitment to address the severe manpower shortage, revision of the promotion policy, and full implementation of the 12th Bipartite Settlement, which many RRBs have yet to adopt.”

The core committee has planned to kick off the celebrations in Visakhapatnam, with the campaign culminating in a national seminar in New Delhi. This will mark 50 years of service to over 40 crore rural customers across the country.

The Golden Jubilee campaign will put the legacy of RRBs at the forefront of significant events, aiming to enhance the role of these banks in rural development and secure the future of their employees.
