On Saturday, October 19, 2024, IDBI Bank employees across the country participated in the black badge protest as part of their ongoing agitation against the government's decision to privatise the bank. The protest, led by the All India IDBI Officers' Association (AIIDBIOA), also aimed to draw attention to the toxic work culture and other unresolved issues within the bank.
Protest Intensifies
The black badge protest marks the second phase of a larger agitation program that began in mid-September. Staff from various regions donned black badges to show their opposition to the privatisation move, which they argue will harm employees, depositors, and the institution's overall future. Vithal Koteshwara Rao, General Secretary of AIIDBIOA, said, “The protest was a success considering the participation from various states. We have started the second phase of protest with the black badge wearing to register our dissent in privatising IDBI bank. We will intensify our struggle against the sale of this national asset.”

The Joint Forum of IDBI Unions, under which this agitation is being coordinated, has indicated plans to escalate the protest further if the government does not reconsider its decision to privatise the bank. The unions have reiterated their commitment to mobilising more employees and intensifying their resistance in the coming days.
