The All India IDBI Officers' Association has raised serious concerns over the toxic work culture in IDBI Bank, urging the Managing Director & CEO to take immediate corrective action.

In a letter dated 15 July 2024, the association highlighted the worsening work conditions faced by officers, particularly those in the Retail Banking Group. Despite multiple communications to the bank's management over the years, the association reported a significant decline in the treatment of branch staff.

The letter enumerated several key issues. Officers are under undue pressure to achieve Transactional Premium Deposit (TPD) business targets, which may lead to potential mis-selling and unethical practices. Additionally, there are instances of derogatory remarks and abusive language by some regional and zonal heads during WhatsApp calls and video conferences, creating an intimidating work environment.

The work-life balance of officers is severely disrupted, with business review meetings and training sessions often scheduled on holidays. Officers are inundated with messages on WhatsApp, extending beyond working hours, which blurs the lines between professional and personal life. The use of WhatsApp for official communications poses transparency, audit trail, and data security issues, the letter accuses.

Physical and virtual meetings are frequently held during late evenings, impacting officers' ability to focus on core responsibilities and customer service during business hours. Many branches, including new ones, suffer from staff shortages, making it challenging to meet unrealistic business targets. Officers remain in clerical roles for extended periods, hindering their skill development and career progression. Furthermore, the bank's reward and recognition programme has not been honoured, demoralising the hardworking officers.

The All India IDBI Officers' Association has urged the MD & CEO to take immediate steps to halt the toxic work culture, particularly in the Retail Banking Group. They stressed the importance of maintaining harmony and industrial peace within the bank to prevent high attrition rates among experienced staff.

The IDBI bank has recently become the talking point in connection with reports suggesting a privatisation move from the government. However, the bankers have been strongly opposing divestment agenda.
