The National Federation of RRB Employees (NFRRBE) has strongly condemned the suspension of Goutam Mukherjee, General Secretary of the Paschim Banga Gramin Bank Employees Association (PBGBEA), calling it a vindictive act aimed at suppressing employees’ voices. The suspension, ordered by the bank’s General Manager on January 28, 2025, follows Mukherjee’s organisation of a meeting with casual workers on bank premises during a non-functional day.

In a letter dated January 29, 2025, addressed to the Chairman of Paschim Banga Gramin Bank (PBGB), the workmen wing of AIRRBEA, NFRRBE criticised the management’s decision, stating, “It is most unacceptable and immature action against a trade union leader, which will flare up large scale unrest not only in your RRB but will spread across the country. Instead of addressing the issues raised by the association regarding part-time casual workers, the management has resorted to threatening union leaders and acting in an autocratic manner.”
The federation emphasised that the suspension reflects an alarming disregard for employees’ rights and warned that such actions could trigger broader unrest across the Regional Rural Bank network.
Union Demands Revocation of Suspension
Goutam Mukherjee, a clerical staff member of PBGB, was issued a show cause notice on January 22 for holding the meeting on January 11, 2025. The PBGBEA has since demanded his immediate and unconditional reinstatement. “We demand upon the management of PBGB to immediately withdraw the order of suspension unconditionally and instead hold discussions with the representatives of the association in resolving the issues in a cordial way,” stated Shiv Karan Dwivedi, General Secretary of NFRRBE.
The union has also called for an open dialogue with the bank’s management to address unresolved issues concerning casual workers. Failure to meet these demands, they warned, could lead to intensified protests at both regional and national levels.
As tensions rise, the spotlight is now on PBGB’s management and its response to the mounting pressure from unions and employees alike.
