In a collective push, multiple unions representing Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) in Uttar Pradesh have appealed to Chief Minister Mr. Adityanath to declare a public holiday on November 1, 2024, under the Negotiable Instruments Act (NI Act). This request aims to allow bank employees across the state to enjoy the Diwali festival without the pressure of work commitments.
The AIRRBEA affiliated Baroda UP Bank Officers Association and the Baroda UP Bank Employees Union, in a letter dated October 20 urging the state’s Chief Minister to consider the significance of Diwali for the workforce. The unions wrote, “The importance of Diwali cannot be overstated as it brings families together, symbolising the triumph of good over evil. Declaring a public holiday will allow employees to strike a balance between their personal and professional lives.” They emphasised that many bank employees are unable to fully participate in the festivities due to their demanding work schedules.

The AIBOC affiliated All India Regional Rural Bank Officers’ Federation (AIRRBOF), in a letter dated October 17, 2024, emphasised the importance of Diwali in the lives of bank employees and their families. “As you are aware, Diwali is an integral part of Sanatan Dharma’s cultural heritage, symbolising the triumph of light, knowledge, and goodness. Declaring a holiday will provide an opportunity for employees working in various departments across the state to spend time with their families, boosting their morale and productivity,” stated Santosh Tiwari, State Secretary of AIRRBOF.

Similarly, the BMS-affiliated Baroda UP Bank Workers Organisation and Baroda UP Bank Officers Organisation, in their letter dated October 20, 2024, highlighted the importance of Diwali, which falls on October 31. They expressed concern that having the next day as a regular working day has dampened the festive spirit among employees. The unions have requested a holiday to maintain the joy and cultural essence of the festival.
