AIRRBEA Organise Meeting of Temporary Workers in TN, Demand Basic Rights

A special meeting was held in Trichy by the Tamil Nadu Grama Bank Workers Union (TNGBWU) and the Tamil Nadu Grama Bank Officers Association (TNGBOA), where several important decisions concerning temporary employees were made.

A special general meeting was held for temporary workers in Regional Rural Banks(RRBs) of Tamil Nadu.  The meeting held on November 9, 2024 in Trichy. This event was jointly organized by the Tamil Nadu Grama Bank Workers Union (TNGBWU) and the Tamil Nadu Grama Bank Officers Association (TNGBOA) under All India Regional Rural Bank Employees Association (AIRRBEA).

Over 600 temporary employees working in Tamil Nadu Grama Bank attended the event, which was chaired by Mr Lakshmi Narayanan. The event also saw participation from Anto Calbert, Arivudainambi, Aswath, Geetha, Solai Manickam, Madhava Raj, Suresh, and Parithiraja; who are the dignataries are from TNGBWU and TNGBOA.

The meeting commenced with a welcome address by TNGBWU Union President, Mr Lakshmi Narayanan. Key leaders from both unions spoke about various efforts and legal actions taken on behalf of temporary employees in Tamil Nadu Grama Bank.

Temporary employees expressed their gratitude to the union leaders for their continued efforts, which have enabled them to receive bonuses through union advocacy.

Mr. Solai Manickam and Suresh discussed the unions' past efforts to secure permanent employment for temporary employees and the successes achieved along the way.

Mr. Madhava Raj remarked, "It has been 50 years since the inception of rural banks, and AIRRBEA has consistently led the fight against the term 'Temporary,' pushing to regularize these temporary employees over the years." His words motivated and inspired all in attendance.

Ms. Geetha, an advocate, stated, “Tamil Nadu Grama Bank is the only bank that consistently fights for temporary employees. AIRRBEA remains the only union in the trade union arena fighting and winning for temporary employees.” Geetha also discussed the ongoing legal cases spearheaded by TNGBWU, the bonuses and PF victories achieved, and the support and guidance provided by BEFI(Bank Employees Federation of India) leaders. She provided updates on the progress of cases related to securing permanent employment for temporary employees and addressed any questions and concerns they raised.

Key Resolutions Passed for Temporary Employees at the Special Meeting:

  1. All temporary employees of Tamil Nadu Grama Bank should be granted permanent employment.
  2. PF deductions should be ensured for all temporary employees.
  3. Minimum wages for temporary employees should be calculated based on the basic pay of a permanent employee.
  4. Efforts should be made to reinstate temporary employees dismissed from their positions.
  5. Legal battles and actions in coordination with All India Unions should continue.

The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks by TNGBWU Acting President, Parithi Raja.
