In a startling incident, the Tamil Nadu Grama Bank Officers Association (TNGBOA) and Tamil Nadu Grama Bank Workers Union (TNGBWU) have raised serious concerns over the inappropriate conduct of Assistant General Manager (AGM) Mr. David Vijayakumar. During an official discussion on the bank’s WhatsApp group, the AGM allegedly responded to a female Branch Manager’s post with an obscene emoticon, triggering outrage among the employees.

The controversial incident occurred on July 29, 2024, during the promotion of the bank’s premium deposit product “AMUDHASURABHI.” Staff members were actively sharing their contributions and achievements in the Thanjavur region's WhatsApp group when Mr. Vijayakumar’s offensive response disrupted the professional atmosphere. This action not only disrespected the female employee but also tarnished the decorum of the group.

Irresponsible and Indecent Act

Reacting to the incident, TNGBOA President Anto Gaulbert told Kanal, “The behaviour of the AGM is irresponsible. We expect senior officials to treat women employees with dignity. Moreover, receiving such messages on personal mobile phones can give a wrong impression to family members and children who might accidentally see them.”

He further added, “The bank management should provide employees with separate mobiles for official work, maintaining a clear demarcation between personal and professional lives.”

Demands of Action

In a letter dated July 30, 2024 addressed to the Chairman of Tamil Nadu Grama Bank, the associations urged immediate disciplinary action against the AGM, Mr. Vijayakumar for violating the respectful and professional working environment. They stressed that such behaviour is unacceptable, especially on social media platforms where female employees are present.

The associations also alleged that this was not an isolated event as Mr. Vijayakumar has a history of similar behaviour, making the group’s members feel uncomfortable. Previously, as a Regional Manager (RM) in the Coimbatore region, he demanded medical reports and scan copies from female employees for medical leave applications, even for short durations. The associations had already condemned his actions and demanded appropriate measures be taken against him.

The associations remain firm in their stance, advocating for swift action to address the misconduct and prevent any recurrence. They believe that maintaining professional conduct and respect among employees is crucial for the bank’s integrity and employee morale.

As the situation unfolds, employees of TNGB await the bank management’s adequate response, ensuring action and uphold the dignity of all employees.
