The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) held a significant meeting in Chennai on 11 December 2024, addressing pressing concerns in the banking sector. Sources indicate that UFBU has decided to launch an agitational programme, including a nationwide strike and a march to Parliament, to highlight several unresolved issues affecting bankers across India.

Key Issues Highlighted

Protection for Bankers on Duty

UFBU expressed grave concern over increasing attacks on bankers at workplaces. In response, the forum is set to demand a Bankers Protection Act to ensure the safety of bankers on duty. Other proposed measures include deploying armed security guards at every branch and enforcing strict legal action against perpetrators of violence.

#5DayBanking Demand

The long-standing demand for a five-day work week remains unfulfilled despite assurances from the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) during the signing of the 12th Bipartite Settlement (BPS). UFBU is expected to urge swift action, as the promise of reducing workdays has yet to translate into a tangible policy.

Staff Recruitment

Acute staff shortages, particularly in the clerical cadre, have led to increased workloads for employees and inconvenience for customers. UFBU plans to press for immediate recruitment, stating that managements have not prioritised addressing this issue despite repeated representations.

DFS Notification on Performance Review

The recent notification from the Department of Financial Services (DFS) concerning performance reviews for bankers above 53 years of age has sparked discontent. UFBU plans to oppose this measure, citing potential risks to job security and fears of involuntary retirements for senior staff, who have served the sector for years.

Issues regarding gratuity entitlements have also been highlighted as part of the agenda. UFBU is expected to include this matter in its planned agitational programme to ensure equitable treatment for all employees.

Agitational Programme in the Pipeline

The UFBU’s upcoming agitation is aimed at drawing attention to these issues. A nationwide strike and a march to Parliament are on the cards, though official circulars detailing the programme are expected to be released soon.

The UFBU meeting in Chennai has underscored the unresolved challenges faced by bankers today. As the unions gear up for action, their demands for safety, staffing, and job security are likely to resonate across the banking community.
