In a tragic incident, Siyaram Prasad, a Chief Manager of Union Bank in Junagarh region of Gujarat, took his own life by hanging at the regional office in the morning on 02 February, leaving behind a suicide note that has reignited widespread concern among bankers. The note, which has circulated on social media platforms, cited overwhelming work pressure and alleged neglect from management as the primary reasons for his extreme step.
Prasad mentioned in his note that he was burdened with multiple assignments leading to an unbearable workload. Despite his repeated appeals for relief, the management reportedly failed to address his grievances, driving him to desperation.

The suicide note has sparked outrage among bank employees and the public alike, with many expressing shock and anger on social media. The incident sheds light on the challenging working conditions faced by public bank officers, who are often tasked with excessive workloads and responsibilities.
Notably, this is the second suicide to occur at the Regional Office during the tenure of the current CMD of Union Bank of India. Prasad's letter directly addressed the CMD, urging attention to the lack of staffing and the issue of assigning multiple responsibilities to the same officer.

Of particular concern is Prasad's use of the term "torture" to describe the treatment he allegedly received from top-level management. His desperate act underscores the urgent need for banks to prioritise employee well-being and address systemic issues contributing to workplace stress and mental health concerns. Perhaps, the mental health concern related to the toxic work environment has been a widely discussed topic among the banking community recently. Kanal had earlier reported the suicide of another banker from Bank of Baroda in November 2023.
As news of Prasad's death continues to spread, calls for accountability and reform within the banking sector are gaining momentum. The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the human cost of unchecked work pressure and the importance of fostering a supportive and empathetic work environment.

Union Bank of India and other relevant authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding Prasad's death and take necessary steps to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
