Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) employees, under the banners of the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and the Maharashtra Gramin Bank Employees Association (MGBEA), have launched large-scale protests across 45 to 50 zones across the country, demanding fair working conditions, and resolution of long-pending grievances. The demonstrations on 12th March 2025 have witnessed participation from around 30 employees per zone, with significant mobilization in key banking hubs such as South Mumbai, Nashik, Chandrapur, Ahmedabad, Ahilyanagar, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Latur, Akola, Kolhapur, Solapur, Ratnagiri, Jalgaon, Nagpur, and Satara.

Mass Protests Across Zones

The protests are primarily organized by clerical and subordinate staff. The employees availed leave to actively participate in the demonstrations, showcasing their unity and determination in pressing for their demands. Officers, while not directly joining the strike, have extended their fraternal support to the movement. Employees ensured that banking services remain unaffected, as confirmed by union leaders.

Devidas Tuljapurkar, General Secretary of the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), highlighted the seriousness of the agitation. "After today's dharna, we will be holding another demonstration outside Lokmangal, the bank’s head office, on the 17th. Following that, a nationwide strike is scheduled on the 20th. Before that, a conciliation meeting has been set up on the 17th," he stated.

He further added, “As of now, the government has not intervened in the matter, and employees continue to push for their demands through peaceful demonstrations”.

Management’s Response and Future Action

While bank management has taken notice of the protests, responses have varied across different zones. In some locations, representatives have agreed to meet employees union leaders for discussions. However, at certain zonal offices, employees have faced restrictions on holding demonstrations within bank compounds, forcing them to continue their agitation outside.

The upcoming strike on the 20th of March is expected to be a crucial turning point in this ongoing labor movement.

Whether management will address their grievances or face an intensified strike remains to be seen. The next few days will be crucial in shaping the future of this ongoing labor movement.
