On March 25, 2025, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Jagdambika Pal renewed his demand in the Lok Sabha for the formation of the National Rural Bank of India (NRBI).

Form NRBI and Regularise Temporary Workers

While addressing the Lower House, Pal emphasized the critical role of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) in providing financial services to rural India and called for the regularisation of temporary workers.

He stated, “Regional Rural Banks have 22,000 branches serving approximately 40 crore people in rural India, but they lack an apex body despite the Government of India holding a 50% stake. Therefore, I demand the formation of NRBI with adequate recruitment at the national level and uniformity in operations.”

He further added, “I also demand the complete regularisation of 20,000 temporary workers serving in RRBs.”

Prolonged Demand for NRBI

The demand to establish the National Rural Bank of India has been a long-standing issue in India’s rural banking sector, with the All India Regional Rural Bank Employees Association (AIRRBEA) being a major proponent of this cause. Pal’s renewed push in Parliament underscores the growing necessity for an apex regulatory body to streamline operations, ensure policy uniformity, and address long-pending issues within RRBs.

With rising concerns over workforce regularisation and policy standardisation, Pal’s advocacy reflects the increasing pressure on the Government of India to take decisive action in shaping the future of rural banking.
