According to the Federation of Bank of India Officers’ Associations (FBOIOA), the officers’ union traces its origins to December 1963, when a group of Bank of India officers met at Sardar Baug, Ahmedabad, seeking to secure dignity, basic rights and a collective voice. Under the leadership of V. M. Devi, the officers began organising, which eventually led to the formal establishment of FBOIOA on November 6, 1964. It is described as the first officers’ trade union in the Indian banking sector.

The federation states that the day is observed to remember founders, past leaders and activists whose contributions shaped the organisation. Among the names recalled is S. R. Sengupta, who played a key role in building FBOIOA as well as in the formation of AIBOC at the national level.
Over six decades, the association reports several areas of work, including wage negotiations, improving service conditions, supporting members in disciplinary matters, and promoting welfare and professional development. It also highlights its role in advocating transparent and humane policies within the workplace.
The circular notes that the current banking environment includes digital transformation, changing work roles and increased performance expectations. The organisation states that its priorities for the future include strengthening welfare systems, enhancing skill development, supporting young officers, and protecting the identity of public sector banking.
