Government Renames Multiple Regional Rural Banks Across India

The Government of India has officially renamed several Regional Rural Banks (RRBs). The Ministry of Finance issued notifications in The Gazette of India on October 23, 2025. These changes aim to simplify bank names and align them with their respective states.

In a recent notification published in The Gazette of India, the Ministry of Finance (Department of Financial Services) announced the renaming of multiple Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) under the provisions of the Regional Rural Banks Act, 1976 (Act 21 of 1976). The move, dated October 23, 2025, follows requests from sponsor banks and aims to bring uniformity and clarity to the names of rural banks across India.

Assam Gramin Vikash Bank Renamed
According to Notification No. S.O. 4831(E), the Assam Gramin Vikash Bank has been renamed as Assam Gramin Bank. The change was made upon the request of the Punjab National Bank (PNB), which sponsors the institution.

Puduvai Bharathiar Grama Bank Becomes Puducherry Grama Bank
Notification No. S.O. 4832(E) states that the Puduvai Bharathiar Grama Bank will now be known as the Puducherry Grama Bank. This change was approved following a proposal by the Indian Bank.

Sarva Haryana Gramin Bank Renamed
The Sarva Haryana Gramin Bank, sponsored by the PNB, will now be called the Haryana Gramin Bank as per Notification No. S.O. 4833(E).

Chhattisgarh Rajya Gramin Bank Shortened
As per Notification No. S.O. 4834(E), the Chhattisgarh Rajya Gramin Bank has been renamed to Chhattisgarh Gramin Bank. The request came from the State Bank of India (SBI), which sponsors the bank.

Jharkhand Rajya Gramin Bank Simplified
Notification No. S.O. 4835(E) mentions that the Jharkhand Rajya Gramin Bank is now renamed as Jharkhand Gramin Bank. This change was also requested by the SBI.

Kerala Gramin Bank Name Update
Finally, Notification No. S.O. 4836(E) confirms that the Kerala Gramin Bank will continue under the same name but with minor legal adjustments. The bank is sponsored by the Canara Bank and falls under the same Gazette update list.

The Ministry of Finance’s renaming of multiple RRBs across India reflects a coordinated effort to bring uniformity to rural banking institutions. These notifications mark a significant administrative update ensuring easier identification and alignment of banks with their respective regions.
