Punjab National Bank’s (PNB) Raebareli Circle has asked Deputy Branch Managers, through a WhatsApp message, to achieve a qualifying score of over 110 enrollments under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY).
Bank officers have flagged growing pressure to meet PMJJBY and PMSBY enrolment targets, citing duplication of work and staff being diverted from regular duties.

Mandatory Targets
PNB’s Raebareli Circle instructed Deputy Branch Managers to reach 110+ PMJJBY enrollments. Progress on this target will be reviewed by the Circle Head at 3 PM. A key instruction mentioned that those who fail to achieve the target must organise Social Security Scheme (SSS) Camps in villages on Saturday and Sunday.

‘Banks are for Public Service, Not Targets’
While speaking to Kanal, Hemant Sharma, working in PNB and National President of WeBankers, said that “Banks were nationalised to serve the public, not to chase enrollment targets. He added that pushing staff into a race similar to private banks creates undue pressure. Customers already trust government banks, so there is no need for additional forced efforts.”
Bankers Voice Concerns
The screenshots capture a wave of social media reactions from bank employees expressing their frustration over mounting PMJJBY and PMSBY enrolment targets. Users point to duplication of work, pressure to meet unrealistic quotas, alleged forced enrollments without customer consent, and the fear of transfers or weekend duties if targets are missed. Several comments also allege that not joining any particular WhatsApp groups could cost employees their transfers. Many posts criticise the reliance on WhatsApp for official instructions, highlight the toll on staff morale and mental health, and call for better support.
