The All India Union Bank Officers’ Federation (AIUBOF) and the All India Union Bank Employees Association (AIUBEA) have issued a joint letter to A. Manimekalai, Managing Director and CEO of Union Bank of India, demanding immediate recruitment of officers and clerical staff to address severe manpower shortages. The unions highlight the growing dissatisfaction among employees due to excessive workloads and inadequate staffing, which is negatively impacting customer service and the bank’s overall performance.

Urgent Need for Recruitment

The joint letter emphasises the critical need for recruiting additional officers and clerical staff to meet the operational demands of various branches. The unions argue that the bank’s current approach of not recruiting new employees is causing significant dissatisfaction, anger, and frustration among the workforce. The contention that the bank is overstaffed by 4,000 employees is further aggravating the situation, especially as branches are struggling to manage their daily operations efficiently.

Impact on Transfers and Promotions

The unions highlight that the lack of recruitment has resulted in a halt to staff transfers and a reduction in promotional opportunities. This stagnation is demoralizing employees and affecting their career progression. Additionally, the bank’s decision to stop compassionate appointments due to non-recruitment is causing further distress among the workforce.

Customer Service and Business Growth

The letter points out that the shortage of staff is not only burdening existing employees with excess workload but also affecting the quality of customer service. Branches are reportedly losing business because they are unable to adequately serve customers. The unions warn that if the recruitment issues are not addressed promptly, the bank’s reputation and business growth will suffer significantly.

Call for Immediate Action

The AIUBOF and AIUBEA urge the top management to reconsider their stance on recruitment and to place an indent with the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) for the necessary staffing. They argue that other public sector banks have continued to recruit to meet their operational needs, and Union Bank’s failure to do so is hindering its progress. The unions believe that a comprehensive assessment of manpower requirements, followed by appropriate recruitment, is essential to resolving the current crisis.
