Joint Council of Mizoram Rural Bank Union Celebrates Golden Jubilee of RRBs with Charity Initiatives
The event celebrating 50 years of Regional Rural Banks highlighted the pivotal role played by AIRRBEA in advocating for bankers’ rights and its significant contributions to their struggles and achievements. The program also featured reports on various charitable initiatives undertaken by bankers, benefiting diverse groups across Mizoram.

The Joint Council of Mizoram Rural Bank Union (MRB Union), comprising the Officers’ Association, Staff Association, and Pensioners’ Association, organized a golden jubilee celebration of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) at their head office in Aizawl on December 13. The event saw the participation of approximately 150 members.

The keynote session highlighted the evolution of the RRBs over the years. Speakers underscored the pivotal role played by the All India Regional Rural Bank Employees Association (AIRRBEA) in championing employees’ struggles, improving work environments, and ensuring significant benefits for the staff. They also emphasized the formation of MRB Union and its crucial role as a trade union in addressing employee concerns and strengthening unity.

The event also featured the Joint Council of MRB Union contributing Rs 8 lakh to various charitable organizations, including shelter homes, orphanages, hospitals with limited resources, and underprivileged individuals across all districts of Mizoram.

Demands Raised
A press handout was distributed highlighting the significant role of RRBs in uplifting the Indian rural economy. The leaflet also outlined the following demands:
- Formation of National Rural Bank of India (NRBI)
- Revision of Manpower policy
- Revision of recruitment and promotion rules
- Revision of staff benefits at par with sponsor banks
- Regularisation of long serving daily waged workers
- Proper implementation of Pension Parity and Computer increment
These demands emerged as AIRRBEA highlighted critical issues such as staff shortages, the need for technical upgradation, and other challenges amid the ongoing amalgamation process under the One State, One RRB policy.
Dignitaries at the Event
The Convener of the Joint Council, Lalrindika Fanai, presided over the gathering. Secretary of the Joint Council, R. Lalruatfela, delivered the golden jubilee message, while Treasurer of MRBOA, Zohmangaiha, presented the charity report. Former MRBOA President, Lalmuanthanga, gave a lecture on the topic “Role of Trade Unions in MRB.” President of MRBSA, Ngurkunga, delivered the vote of thanks. The event concluded with entertainment programs, followed by dinner.
It is to note that in addition to Mizoram, several other states like Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand have conducted similar golden jubilee events.
