News Impact
In a WhatsApp message circulated to employees, the Regional Manager (RM) clarified that the intent of the earlier communication was misinterpreted. The RM stated, “Our intent was only to hoist the national flag with customers and staff to promote cultural integrity and harmony. We humbly apologize for asking you to celebrate Republic Day with all staff and the opening of branches.”

An employee expressed relief following the retraction, stating, “Kanal’s report shed light on our concerns, prompting the reversal of the order. This marks a small yet significant victory for employees who stood resilient against the misuse of authority.”
While the Regional Manager reiterated the importance of cultural events and flag-hoisting ceremonies, he emphasized that the misunderstanding regarding mandatory branch operations was regrettable. The apology and clarification mark a notable shift in tone, with a promise to balance business goals with employee welfare.

The earlier order had sparked outrage among employees, who saw the directive as an imposition on a national holiday traditionally observed with pride and respect. The backlash was amplified when the issue gained public attention through Kanal media’s report.
In Odisha, this marks the second instance where Kanal’s reporting has driven significant impact. In February 2024, Kanal highlighted the termination of 350 daily wage workers in Utkal Grameen Bank. The report prompted swift action, leading the bank’s Chairman to reverse the order and reinstate all 350 temporary workers.
The incident in Odisha Gramya Bank highlights the growing awareness among bank employees about their rights and the critical role of the media in ensuring accountability within institutions. It also underscores the need for management to communicate directives clearly and consider the morale and well-being of their workforce.
