Nationwide Strike Highlights Gramin Bank Unions’ Push for Reforms and 5-Day Banking

The All India Gramin Bank Workers Organisation (AIGBWO) and All India Gramin Bank Officers Organisation (AIGBOO), industrial units of Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), have announced a nationwide strike on 22nd August. This marks the 4th phase of their agitation, highlighting key demands related to rural banks, staff welfare, and parity with commercial banks.
Key Demands of the Agitation
The organisations have raised multiple demands including protection of the rural and public character of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), rectification of transfer policy anomalies, and full parity in allowances and service conditions with commercial banks. They have also sought complete implementation of the 12th Bipartite Settlement (BPS) and the 9th Joint Note.

Focus on Recruitment, Promotions and Staff Welfare
The agitation highlights the need for adequate recruitment, fair promotion rules, and regularisation of temporary staff to end exploitation. It also demands that banks should bear the cost of staff perquisites and address issues related to employee benefits.

Structural and Policy Demands
The organisations have called for the formation of Rashtriya Gramin Bank while keeping operations state-specific. Other demands include inclusion of RRB unions in IBA negotiations, restoration of the old pension scheme.
The demand also highlights the long-pending issue of implementation of 5-day banking.
