In a letter dated 15 May 2024, the All India Punjab National Bank Officers' Association (AIPNBOA), Bijnor Circle, Uttar Pradesh, raised serious allegations of harassment and undue pressure on officers by the Circle Office. The letter, addressed to the Circle Head of Punjab National Bank(PNB) in Bijnor, lists multiple grievances and demands immediate action. Despite the passage of two weeks, no significant steps have been taken to resolve these issues.

Ongoing Harassment Allegations

The letter details numerous incidents of harassment, including the suspension of an officer, which the association claims was meant to create fear among staff. Additional allegations include forcing a pregnant branch manager to stay late for meetings, compelling staff to work extended hours without written orders, and routinely insulting employees and borrowers.

Speaking to Kanal, an officer from PNB Bijnor Circle, who requested anonymity, expressed frustration: “The issues addressed in the letter remain unresolved. No significant step has been taken towards resolution. The management and the Bijnor Circle officials want to create an atmosphere of fear among the bankers, making us comply with unethical or unprofessional demands.”

AIPNBOA Calls For Protest Demonstration

Citing inaction of the circle office on the demands raised in their letter, AIPNBOA has again written to the PNB Bijnor Circle Head on 27 May 2024, notifying a protest demonstration at the circle office on 04 June 2024 after the working hours. The association also declared the withdrawal of extra cooperation with the management for improving business.

These reports of harassment and undue pressure are not isolated to the Bijnor Circle. Similar complaints have emerged from various banks across the country, indicating a broader, systemic issue within the banking sector. The shift towards a toxic work culture is becoming increasingly apparent, affecting the morale and mental health of bank officers nationwide. The unresolved grievances of the officers call for prompt and effective action from higher authorities to ensure a fair and supportive work environment.
