UFBU Pune Holds Candle Light March, Submits Memorandum After BoB Officer’s Suicide Over Work Pressure

United Forum of Bank Unions Pune organised a peaceful candle light march at the Bank of Baroda Zonal Office, Pune. The tribute was held in memory of Chief Manager Shivshankar Mitra, who allegedly died by suicide due to work-related stress.

The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) Pune organised a candle light march in Pune. The march was held in memory of Shivshankar Mitra, Chief Manager of Baramati Main Branch,who passed away by suicide. Following the tribute, UFBU submitted a memorandum to the Zonal Manager of Bank of Baroda (BoB), highlighting concerns related to workload, mental health, and staff well-being in the banking sector.

In a heartfelt gesture of solidarity, UFBU Pune held a candle light march on 21st July 2025, outside BoB’s Zonal Office, Pune (Sharda Center). 

This peaceful gathering witnessed participation from numerous union representatives and bank staff from different organisations under the UFBU banner.

Concerns Over Workplace Stress

The death of Chief Manager Shivshankar Mitra, who allegedly died by suicide due to work-related stress, led to concerns among staff members about workplace stress, mental health, and the working environment. The gathering was held not only to pay tribute but also to express solidarity on the issues being faced by the banking community.

Memorandum Submitted to Zonal Manager

On the same day of protest, UFBU Pune submitted an official letter to Shri Sinha, Zonal Manager of BoB, Pune Zone. The memorandum expressed concerns about work pressure and staff well-being, referencing the incident involving Shivshankar Mitra. The letter highlighted the impact of excessive workload and long working hours.

Key Staff Welfare Demands Outlined

The memorandum, signed by Vitthal Mane, Convenor of UFBU Pune, outlined five key points for the bank’s consideration. These included proper distribution of workload across cadres, regulated working hours, stress management support, improved communication on mental health concerns, and initiatives like wellness programs and timely leave approvals to ensure a more balanced work environment.
