In a significant development, Union Bank Management has reached a mutual consensus with the All India Union Bank Officers' Federation (AIUBOF), marking a crucial step towards addressing the pressing issues raised during the ‘Mission Swabhiman’ campaign. Following constructive dialogue and deliberation, both parties have committed to fostering a fair and respectful work environment that prioritises the well-being of bank employees.

Key issues discussed included the proliferation of WhatsApp groups and the ensuing pressure to post daily progress reports, the prevalence of late-night messages and video conferences, and the imposition of late sittings and holiday work as punitive measures. In response, the management has affirmed its commitment to implementing strict guidelines to regulate communication channels and ensure the respectful treatment of officers. Additionally, measures will be taken to streamline the purpose and scheduling of video conferences, respecting officers' personal time and work-life balance. Moreover, assurances have been provided regarding the prohibition of late sittings unless under emergency circumstances and the issuance of clear written instructions for holiday work, with compensatory off arrangements.

In light of the negotiations and the positive strides made towards addressing the concerns raised by the ‘Mission Swabhiman’ campaign, AIUBOF has announced the suspension of its organisational action. The organisation had earlier given a strike notice if the concerns raised were not addressed.

The success of the ‘Mission Swabhiman’ campaign has garnered widespread appreciation, both within the banking community and beyond. Acknowledged as a commendable effort to address systemic issues plaguing the industry, the campaign reflects a collective determination to uphold the dignity and well-being of bank employees. Many bankers active on social media also appreciated the campaign as a brave initiative, and pointed to similar issues persisting in other public sector banks(PSBs). Similar issues like use of WhatsApp for official communicationholiday worklate night meetings etc have been reported from other PSBs including the State Bank of India and the Bank of Baroda

As the banking sector continues to evolve, initiatives like ‘Mission Swabhiman’ serve as a testament to the power of collective advocacy in effecting positive change.

However, AIUBOF remains vigilant in ensuring the enforcement of agreed-upon measures. In their new circular, AIUBOF urged the officers to maintain their commitment to work-life balance by adhering to the completion of official duties by 5:45 PM and promptly leaving the office by 6 PM. Additionally, state affiliates of the federation have been tasked to closely monitor field incidents and promptly report any violations to the Regional Office or Field General Manager's Office for resolution. While acknowledging the management's positive attitude during negotiations, AIUBOF emphasises its readiness to resume action if necessary, pending a thorough review of the situation.
