In another shocking incident highlighting the growing insecurity faced by rural bankers in Uttar Pradesh, an officer and his associate from Uttar Pradesh Gramin Bank’s Rampur Mathura branch in Sitapur district were allegedly attacked in broad daylight by armed assailants while on duty. Despite an FIR being filed, no arrests have been made so far, raising serious concerns over police inaction.
According to a letter submitted to the Sitapur Police Superintendent by the Aryavart Bank Officers’ Association (ABOA), affiliated to AIRRBOF and AIBOC, the incident occurred on June 19, 2025, when Rohit Verma and Sunil Kumar, of the Rampur Madhura branch, went to recover dues from a borrower.

Attack on Bankers, a threat to Rural Service: Says Union
According to a member of the Aryavart Bank Officers’ Association (ABOA), the borrower, Prabhu Dayal—resident of Purana Kothar village—along with his family members, verbally abused and physically assaulted the bank staff. Both Rohit Verma and Sunil Kumar sustained serious injuries and reportedly managed to escape with great difficulty to save their lives.
An FIR (No. 0214 dated 19.06.2025) has been registered under relevant sections, but no arrests have been made yet, even after five days—a delay that has angered the union and staff community alike.
Association Slams Delay, Seeks Immediate Arrests
Expressing concern over the lack of prompt police action, ABOA General Secretary Bholendra Pratap Singh noted that even after clear identification, local authorities have failed to act.
“Despite an FIR being lodged and local inputs available, no arrests have taken place. This delay sends a worrying message to those risking their lives in rural service,” Singh said.
The union has appealed to senior officials in Uttar Pradesh Police and the Finance Ministry to intervene. The letter has also been marked to the DGP, Principal Secretary (Finance), DM Sitapur and Chairman UPGB.
Ensuring Safety Before Service
ABOA President Tanmay Tiwari emphasized that rural bankers are continuing to serve the public under unsafe conditions, and the administration must ensure a secure environment for staff to carry out their duties effectively.
“We urge that the accused be arrested immediately, and that measures be taken to restore a secure and respectful work environment for bank employees in the region,” he said.
The Sitapur assault comes just days after a similar abduction and assault case in Basti district involving Uttar Pradesh Gramin Bank staff on June 21, raising fresh concerns over the deteriorating safety environment for bankers across Uttar Pradesh.
